Development of new drugs for treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) is facing a crisis. As is the case with drug development generally, the uncertain and very expensive pathway to approval is a substantial impediment. In the case of lupus, the multiple facets of the disease have made it very difficult to develop a compound which will provide effective treatment, and several recent high-profile clinical trial failures have caused the pharmaceutical industry to question the wisdom of investing in the search for drugs to treat lupus. As a result, only one new treatment has been approved for lupus in the past fifty years. The traditional model of new drug development is not effectively addressing the urgent need for progress in the search for treatment and cure of Lupus.
